After a long break we finally returned to our regular classes. My first week on Matt's and Sofia's team was alright. This week on Thursday we had to make a meal for four with only using $5. We had to make a healthy meal, which had to to have 2 fresh items. My group consisted of Jackie, Jake, Melannie and I. At first we didn't know what to make especially since we had a budget we thought it was going to be hard but then my group and I decided to make a egg breakfast, we used eggs, bread, ham, onions and tomatoes. We bought an onion, bread and tomatoes which was only $2.70 the eggs and ham we got them from other groups. We divided up the work, cutting tomatoes, onions, and making an egg. When it was our turn to present I thought the judges weren't going to like our dish because the egg and bread was cold, but they ended up liking it. Week 2My second week of school, my class and I read a speech of two guys that had different opinions on the League of Nations and discussed on each persons strongest argument if the U.S.A should or shouldn't join the league of nations. Both speeches were inspiring, powerful, and determine. We also read an article named "Donald Trump and the United Nations: a fight waiting to happen?" and had a class discussion about it and with that we answered some questions our teacher had showing on the write board. The United Nations is an organization that has to do with political/economic/works to improve different things they need to. This second week was okay, I think I could've focused and concentrated more on what we were doing in each class. But overall this week was filled with class discussions and readings. Week 3During week three in humanities we read, talked about human rights, and got assigned our country that we are going to represent. My teacher assigned me Malaysia, which I don't know anything about that country but I look forward on getting to know this country. Before we could research we had to annotate the United Nations Handbook that our teacher gave us. On Friday we began our research. Another task we did was analyzed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. My partner and I were assigned these articles. Once we read them we had to make a poster, which had to have a picture that represented what the article was saying. For me it was a little hard to understand what exactly of each article was saying. Until my teacher helped us understand it. Article 6 Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law. Article 7 All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination. Article 8 Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law. I feel like I've gotten better at understanding at the readings my teacher has given us and underlining the important parts. This week I feel like I could've been more productive and used my time wisely. Week 5This week we spent time on working on preparing a binder and our introduction paragraph for our united nations meeting. In the binder we had to have these following things:
or anything that we thought was helpful, we had to print out and put it in our binder, to be ready and know what to say for the conference. My class meeting was on Thursday, it took place at USD. The whole purpose of doing this was to be heard and know what problems every country is facing. We talked in front of our classmates, teachers and the Honorable Chair. At first I thought I wasn't going to say anything because I was really nervous, but I stepped up and said a couple of things, I was also very engaging with a lot of my peers. Week 6In week 6, on Thursday we were assigned with a group of 5 and given a small part of a article, my group consisted of Melannie, Miles, Julian, Junaid and I. We had to explain what consolidation is, why our trend occur and the impact on it. Other groups got these topics specialization, mechanization, chemical and pharmaceutical input and market concentration. Consolidation is the shift toward fewer farms and larger farms. Larger farms were getting larger and the smaller farms were going out of business. More power is in the hands of fewer people. I think we understood and summarized our topic well. I was a little nervous when it was our turn to present even though I didn't speak. I did contribute I wrote some things on the poster even though there isn't a lot. Next time we have a presentation Ill try to speak, so I can practice and overcome it. Week 7This week we began to work on our project for this semester, which is called Comida Con Causa, which means 'food with a cause'. We started of by going to farmers markets, interviewing and seeing what its like to own a business. My group and I decided to sell mini-pies. We also made a business plan. I contributed by telling them what we should sell and the packaging of our food. Instead of ordering or getting paper bags/white wax paper bags, we should just order a rubber stamp with out logo/business name and stamp the bags. It would be less money and better for us. Since we have a budget. Week 8This week we were assigned to read a short chapter from "". This article was about We also worked on our project for a bit, had a meeting with our teachers, everyone in our group had to say what they were working on, there"job". I was really frustrated because some people in my group weren't communicating with me or listening to the ideas I had. I really didn't know what I was doing or what to contribute, I would ask if they needed help but they would tell me "I don't know". So when the meeting was over I talked to my group to get things clear and they told me what I could do. If I were to do this project again I would have to communicate more with my group. Week 9 This week we worked more on our project 'Comida Con Causa'.
Our socratic seminar article was called "The apple that never browns" this article was about how genetically modify brown apples never get brown and are good for your health but yet they don't want to label this product and tell us what it contains. Some questions I had were : if these non-browning apples "arent bad" then why don't you label them? whose looking out for us ? According to the article, ' The Food and Drug Administration r
